Stitch and Bone
Small Yellow/Gold Beetle Embroidered Insect
Small Yellow/Gold Beetle Embroidered Insect
Hand-stitched completely by hand, this one of a kind three-dimensional stumpwork embroidery piece has been constructed out of an array of stunningly lush and opulent hand picked materials in an assortment of beautifully vibrant and rich shades of yellow, gold and bronze.
This exquisite piece is an explosion of colour, texture and painstaking detail and has been meticulously constructed over the course of numerous hours and several weeks.
Every little critter is of an original design that has been lovingly handmade by Rachel, the artist behind Stitch and Bone Handcrafted. As a result of the individual hand-crafted creation process no two pieces are exactly the same and due to the handmade nature of these works slight ‘imperfections’ may be present. And I like that! Handmade goods, by their very definition, suggests an element of imperfection and reminds you of the hands that made them. Any ‘imperfections’ are a part of the artwork and contribute to the quality and enhance the beauty of the piece. These contribute to the uniqueness and beauty of the forms and are part of the character of each individual and unique piece.
Whilst my creation process embraces facets of traditional stumpwork embroidery, this piece embodies both the old and the new and is the amalgamation of traditional stumpwork embroidery along with techniques and methods I have devised during my years making these little critters. Designed to be a fantastical ‘dressed up’ representation of the insect shape rather than a realistic replica this little critter would make the perfect addition to the home of an entomology admirer or lover of beautiful, one of a kind pieces.
All pieces are hand embroidered and no machines have been used in the process.

About Stitch and Bone Early Artworks
About Stitch and Bone Early Artworks
I have decided it is time to part ways with some of my older work to not only make way for new/upcoming exhibiton pieces but also I think it is time for me to wrestle with my hoarding tendencies! My tiny little studio is bursting with upcoming work and exhibition pieces, materials and my never ending collection of trinkets and I have decided it is time to let these little critters out and about into the world and give others the chance to enjoy them!
These little critters were some of the first pieces of Stitch and Bone and because of this they are priced differently to my current pieces. Every piece I make is made using the amalgamation of traditional stumpwork embroidery along with techniques and methods I have devised during my years making these little critters and these pieces were integral to finding my creation process for my art. Unlike my current work which is framed in Tasmanian oak shadow box frames with anti-reflective Artglass, these little critters are housed in reclaimed Tasmanian oak shadow box frames (with varying stains) with framing quality UV Perspex - my old style of framing. This style of framing does not include the engraved brass label on the side of the frame like my current works.
These pieces are beautiful and vibrant and have been priced at a lower price point than my current work. I absolutely adore these pieces - hence why I have held onto them for so long! - but because they are my older work and the cost of materials, framing and construction time for these pieces are not as high as my current pieces I have adjusted prices accordingly. It should be noted that these pieces are not as ‘detailed’ as my current work. The legs in a few of these pieces are not as detailed in design and my current works include some materials (specifically some types of metal/goldwork threads) that were not available to my older pieces. It should also be noted that due to the handmade nature of these frames and the use of reclaimed timber there may be some bumps/scratches/dips/marks in the timber - in my opinion this adds to the charm and look of the artwork! There may also be the presence of small imperfections in the perspex glass.
Once these pieces are gone that is it in regards to selling my older pieces. There will be no more of my work at these prices!
These pieces have been photographed beautifully and all effort has been taken to capture them as accurately as possible.
Materials
Materials
This shadow box frame has been handmade for the piece from Tasmanian Oak wood that has been stained and framing quality UV protected perspex glass. Materials used in the mounting of the piece are Alpharag ARTCARE Archival Matboard, Alpharag ARTCARE Archival Foamboard, linen lacing thread, frame points, Ph7-70 Acid Neutral Double Sided Conservation ATG Tape, Lineco Archival Quality Frame Backing Paper and Lineco Archival Quality Frame Sealing Tape.
This frame has hanging wire and bumpers on the back so it can hang from a wall or due to the depth of the frame it can sit on a flat surface such as a desk, shelf or mantel.
Care information
Care information
The delicate stumpwork/embroidery insects should not be removed from the display frame. Everything has been carefully placed and sealed in the frame in a specific manner so to undo it all is to damage the conservation/archival quality of the framing.
When cleaning acrylic surfaces, it is recommended to use a soft microfibre cloth as more abrasive cleaning cloths can leave scratches. Microfibre is great at picking up dust and dirt without the use of water. In many cases a quick wipe down of the glass will be enough to keep it looking great however if you need to it is best to use mild soap and water or a product designed for cleaning plastics. Regular glass cleaner is not recommended - avoid cleaning solutions, especially if they contain ammonia. Paper towels also can be a little abrasive, soft cotton or micro-fiber cloth is recommended. If you should find a little scratch in your acrylic, we suggest the Novus brand of products that can be used to buff out minor scratches. #3 for a deep scratch, #2 for an artificial scratch and #1 for an all-purpose every day polish and shine.
Please, handle with care when hanging/placing/storing your artwork, avoiding exposure to direct sunlight, excessive heat, humidity and water. These pieces are happiest out of direct sunlight. High quality materials, acid free paper and adhesives and UV resistant glass have been used in the creating and framing of this piece however fading may occur and materials compromised in direct light. Also avoid hanging, placing or storing the artwork in in areas of high humidity, where water damage may occur or above open fireplaces or places in direct proximity to heating as damage from smoke and excess heat may occur.
Please note that this is not a toy. It is not suitable for children.
