About Stitch and Bone

Hello there and welcome to Stitch and Bone!

My name is Rachel and I am a self-taught stumpwork embroidery artist and the hands and mind behind the creations of Stitch and Bone.

Stitch and Bone is the amalgamation of my fascination and awe of the natural world - in particular insects - and my love of creating pieces made out of beautiful materials.

From the time of being a tiny human I have always been an avid drawer, a creator of 'stuff' and a magpie of sorts - a true lover of ‘things’ and a keen collector of facts, curiosities, objects, trinkets and all things beautiful, shiny and spellbinding. These obsessions are something that continue on to this very day and for many more I am sure! My own quirky mélange of objects - in particular all the beautiful taxidermy insects I have found over the years - have heavily influenced my work and were the springboard for how I would present these creations. It was the vision I had of my own faux entomology creations sitting in their own frames on the wall amongst my collection of prints, art pieces and framed taxidermy insects that was the catalyst for me pursuing this creative hobby and it was the positive response from friends and family that encouraged me to share my creations.

Handmade in Rural Australia, Stitch and Bone creates beautiful and unique stumpwork embroidery pieces that have been inspired by the little insect critters that inhabit the natural world. Often overlooked these endlessly fascinating creatures cannot help but spark the imagination through their array of shapes, sizes and colours! These creations are not designed to be realistic replicas but rather fantastical representations  - “dressed-up” versions of an insect shape that have been embellished and adorned with beautiful beads, fabrics, threads and high quality crystals.

All pieces are designed and delicately stitched by my own hands in my studio. Each piece is comprised of its own individual design - as there is no set design process or template for these little critters each piece is unique to itself with no two pieces being exactly the same.

Whilst Stitch and Bone embraces facets of traditional stumpwork embroidery this creative venture endeavours to create pieces that embody modern elements, bringing this intricate and established art-form into the present day through pieces that will hopeful be loved and treasured forever - and perhaps become a part of someone else’s collection! My hope is that these little critters will incite inspiration and speak to others - one of the most rewarding aspects of Stitch and Bone is when a piece connects with someone and I know they will love it as much (and maybe more) than I do!
